Cardiff is the cosmopolitan capital city of Wales, well served by Cardiff International Airport, the national railway network and close to the M4 motorway. The recently developed Cardiff Bay area, in which St David's Hotel & Spa is located, is only five minutes from Cardiff city centre. Adjacent to the hotel is Mermaid Quay, which offers a wide range of restaurants, bars and entertainment, providing a vibrant extension to the attractions within the city centre. The new Welsh Parliament and the Welsh National Opera are also in Mermaid Quay. The National Museum & Gallery, located in the centre of Cardiff, has the largest collection of Impressionist paintings outside Paris; Cardiff's Millennium Stadium has established itself as a popular venue for major sports events and concerts and is only five minutes from St David's Hotel & Spa by car; and the quaint shopping arcades provide a glimpse of Cardiff-past and complement the city's modern shopping facilities. In the heart of Cardiff, one of Wales' leading attractions is Cardiff Castle, built in the 19th century on medieval foundations within a Norman wall. The Museum of Welsh Life, just four miles outside Cardiff at St Fagan's provides an interesting insight to daily lives of the Welsh people over the last 500 years with over 30 original Welsh houses re-erected on the site. The countryside surrounding Cardiff, including the Brecon Beacons, provides a picturesque perimeter to the city, and it is worth making time for a tour along the picturesque coastline and around the numerous castles which form the heritage of Wales. |
