Frankfurt am Main, the dynamic and international financial and trade fair city has the most imposing skyline in Germany. This is the image that many visitors associate with the Main metropolis. But the city in the heart of Germany and Europe can offer many other facets and contrasting variety. Near to the skyscrapers you can find cosy Ebbelwei pubs and at the heart of the bustling city center you can find historical sights again and again. Frankfurt is not just proud of its most famous son, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The Kaiserdom (Cathedral) and the Paulskirche, the cradle of German democracy, are also to be found here. Interesting destinations for excursions in and around Frankfurt turn your stay into a great experience and you will love to come back. Their facades are made of glass or cement. Sometimes they are narrow, sometimes round, sometimes pointed, sometimes with and sometimes without an antenna. They have given Frankfurt the sobriquet of 'Mainhattan'. Back in the fifties, the Kaiserdom with its 96 meters was still the highest building in the city. Today, the Commerzbank Tower, with its antenna, stretches almost 300 meters into the sky. In total, some one hundred high-rise buildings tower over the city, most of them bank and office buildings. After constructing a skyline that is unique in Europe, the city on the Main is now catapulting the city center itself out of the 20th into the 21st century. One example of this is 'Frankfurt Hoch 4', a shopping center with two high-rise buildings, located in the heart of the city on the shopping mile, the Zeil. In turn, in the east of Frankfurt, the Großmarkthalle that opened in 1928 is being handed over to the European Central Bank. The ECB will use the architectural monument as a 'lobby' for its headquarters in Frankfurt and plans to move into it in 2009. The 185 m tall, spectacularly inwardly turning, double high-rise building being developed directly next to the Großmarkthalle has been designed by the Vienna architects from Coop Himmelb(l)au. Undoubtedly, it will become a symbol for the Euro and for the financial location of Frankfurt. |
Some Sightseeing you should not miss:
Boats tour on the Main Traveling along the impressive skyline on an excursion boat or going on a boat cruise to interesting towns and cities on the Main and the Rhine - Frankfurt offers numerous options for little 'cruises' and big tours. Only a few steps away from the Römer, directly on the Main quay at the Eiserner Steg, there is the main landing stage and the ticket kiosk of the Primus Line.
Eppelwei Express Traveling leisurely through Frankfurt, enjoying a glass of original Ebbelwei (Apfelwein or cider) - a city tour in the Ebbelwei Express makes this possible. The colourful tram carriage has been part of the Frankfurt cityscape since 1977 and takes its guests to the finest sights of the Main metropolis. The historical tram, also affectionately called the 'Ließsche' by the people of Frankfurt, is comfortably equipped for its passengers. You can travel at ease from the Römer to the zoo, crossing the Main and travelling through the Ebbelwei district in Sachsenhausen. Then, the tram travels across the Main again to the central station and to the exhibition grounds. From here, the tour again heads in the direction of the Römer. The trip lasts for a total of approx. one hour. The passengers can get on and off punctually according to the timetable at all stops of the Ebbelwei Express whenever they want. Römer The Emperors meanwhile enjoyed themselves at the banquet feast. Today, in general, the entire city hall complex is referred to as the 'Römer'. The actual 'Römer', however, is only the middle one of three houses with its characteristic stepped gables. It has served as a town and city hall since 1405. The Emperors' Hall is situated on the first floor. All 52 emperors who ruled the Empire from 768 to 1806 are immortalised here in oil paintings.
Cathedral Not even tourists and those new to Frankfurt can fail to miss the starting point of our historic stroll through the city: With its 95 m high tower rising over Frankfurt city center, the Cathedral (Dom) can be seen from afar. Its beginnings date back to the year 852. Ten emperors were crowned here between 1562 and 1792. What does it matter that the term 'Cathedral' is actually a slight exaggeration, because it was never the home of a bishop.
Goethe-Haus Here, we are allowed to take a look at the kitchen of Goethe and his mother 'Frau Aja'. In the Goethe House (Goethe-Haus), everything is as it was back then. |
